Hannah catches up with British-Indian Soprano Natasha Agarwal ahead of their shared #secretconcert series in September!

An opera with cabaret seasoning, interweaving pre-existing art song and jazz from Berlioz to Billy Strayhorn, Kurt Weill to Errollyn Wallen, as well as exciting new music from classical and cabaret composer Ben Comeau.

I am delighted to be joining DEBUT! Audience members can expect to be moved and experience a wide range of emotions with the music I am sharing and I am sure they will all hear something new!

In June, we were lucky to have bassoonist Daria Phillips join us for our #secretconcert series. This the first time we have ever showcased a bassoon at DEBUT, and it’s made us realise how little is known about some hidden gems found in the orchestra.

Our Head of Marketing Hannah Shilvock is a bass clarinet specialist, and we have her low-down on the other hidden gems you need to know about!

The bassoon is a hidden gem!
Almost unintentionally, I have created a programme surrounding the voice. My chosen voice as a musician is the bassoon, and in these concerts I look to express the themes of nature, people & connection. I hope that the audience joins me in reflecting on these closely connected motifs.

Hidden in the heart of Shoreditch, just a 5 minute walk from Old Street station - a breathtakingly beautiful loft full of plants, unique and quirky furniture, and most importantly of all - a concert Steinway Grand piano! Truly one of the best pianos we have had the pleasure to play in London.

It’s time to celebrate some exciting emerging composers making waves in the UK.

At DEBUT, we love looking to the future of classical music and celebrating the brilliance of the musicians around us. Over the last year I have been stunned by some of the new music I have seen coming out of the UK’s composition scene. As a bass clarinettist I’ve learnt to think creatively about the music I play and the collaborations I make, and along the way I’ve had the immense pleasure of working with some ground-breaking emerging composers. Lizzie (DEBUT’s founder) and Benjamin cut their teeth together at the University of Warwick (where they met), working on productions of Figaro, Bohème, Hansel and Gretel and Flute. We felt that this was something that was needed for emerging professional musicians, and a great way to get the wider community involved too.

Thank you to everyone who made our Secret Concert series at Shoreditch Treehouse in 2022 so memorable, from all the team, to our incredible musicians and audience.
